Disclaimer: This is not a post to talk down about being a teacher here. I love teaching here. This is a post that shows what being a teacher here is like. Teaching here is not for the faint of heart. Teaching here is not for those who dislike being out of the loop. Teaching here IS for the flexible. Teaching here IS for those who can Go With The FLOW!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Today is the first day for students AT MY SCHOOL. The 1st day for students for everyone else in Abu Dhabi was September 2. Yup! I know what you're thinking. Why? How does that even work? When last school year ended we found out that our school would be renovated (CLICK HERE TO READ THE POST THAT CONTAINS THE PICTURES) because we'd be welcoming more students due to school closures and schools combining. We were told it would be ready by the time school started. The first day for teachers was August 26. I pulled up to the school on August 26 and this is what I saw.

The UAE is home to so many world's largest, tallest, fastest, longest attractions. The world's largest indoor theme park - IMG World - Dubai, UAE The world's fastest rollercoaster - Formula Rossi at Ferrari World - Abu Dhabi, UAE The world's largest mall - The Dubai Mall - Dubai, UAE The world's tallest building - Burj Khalifa - Dubai, UAE The world's tallest hotel - JW Marriott Marquis - Dubai, UAE The world's longest zip line - Jebel Jais Flight - Ras al Khaimah, UAE Before today I am able to say that I have been/rode/visited all of the above items on the list EXCEPT 1. After today I am able to say that I have been/rode/visited ALL OF THE ABOVE! Today I conquered the longest zip line in the world! If you've been reading my blog you know that I have been trying to eat healthy, lose weight, etc. I was doing great for a while and then I don't know something changed and I went back to my old eating habits and I saw every single bad choice show up on my body.
Well it has been a little while since my last post! I'm going to try to summarize what we've been up to.
To commemorate the end of the school year, the school provided lunch for all of the teachers. There was no silverware, plates, etc so we had to eat the traditional way - with our hands. The below picture is the after for our table. Each table had this exact platter. #Experience #StayOpenMinded #NewForMe Mike and I often talk about how our life here is vastly different from our lives back in the Queen City (Charlotte, NC).
Doing Staycations is something that we would never have done. One because our budget was tight and Two we never had time. So we jump at chances to Do Life Big! Before coming here people were so quick to tell us about all of the things WE WOULD NOT be able to do. I am happy to report that many of those things simply are not true. People said I would have to always cover up. Nope. People said we would have to walk on different sides of the road or hallway. Nope. People said we would not be able to hold hands or show affection. Nope.
In the last post I talked about being in many different FB groups. This post will begin the same way. Recently I joined a group called UAE Staycations and after browsing through the group my first thought was where has this been all my life???
The first thing I saw that caught my eye was this... One thing I've learned since being here is that there are Facebook groups for everything! I'm in a group on facebook called Best Bites of Abu Dhabi. This group is dedicated to people who like good food. Members of this group ask for recommendations for ladies nights, places to eat, places for takeout, and so much more. There are also various competitions that the admins of the groups will post too. I enter many of the competitions not thinking that I'll ever win. Well, my thinking was wrong! I won dinner for 2 at Al Ain Aloft's Thursday Seafood Feast at Olive Tree which is inside the hotel.
Al Ain is about an hour and a half from Abu Dhabi. It is actually one of the cities we could have been placed. So, Mike and I decided to make a weekend trip of going to Al Ain to enjoy the Seafood Feast. 8 months have gone by and Spring Break is here! Most of my colleagues and friends have planned to travel for Spring Break. Mike and I have gone back and forth about what to do and where to go. We decided since the weather was nice and there is SO much to do here we decided to do a Staycation. Yep, that's right we are going to relax and enjoy some of the things that the UAE has to offer. One place we decided to go to was IMG World. This post is going to be a compilation of videos and pictures! We just had our first visitor from back home! The entire week was so fun and exciting! Which one of you will be next? You may be saying I don't recognize your visitor. Or I don't know who your visitor is. Well, let me tell you a little story.
