We wanted to go to Dubai for our Anniversary but the sleep monster took over us that day so we postponed our trip. A couple friend of ours invited us to Dubai and we were very excited for the trip.
Dubai is about 2 hours away and it is really a straight shot. Before we left the US we researched getting a car. We were told to rent. We were told to lease. We were told if you plan on staying for more than 1 year you should buy. We did not know what direction to go in. After being here for about 3.5 weeks we started thinking about how much money we had spent in taxi fare. The places that we needed to go to while in the hotel were too far to walk and once we got to our flat the places we could walk to did not have what we needed. So we decided to get a car.
We've been in the UAE a little less than a month. We are extremely grateful for every experience we've encountered thus far. When we are riding back to our tower we see the tower from the street and we are immediately humbled. We knew God would provide but we are honestly living a resort style life! This post is about some of the experiences we've had the pleasure to enjoy.
Part of the perks of accepting this job other than living in a wonderful country is that housing is paid for. On Day 1 we were told that we'd be able to find our own housing and they'd pay as long as it was under the amount allotted. I had asked questions via email for clarity about this but I received no answers.
Day 3 - Orientation began on Sunday. That's right the work week is Sunday through Thursday. Orientation began with all of the new teachers gathering in a ballroom in our hotel. If I had to guess I'd say there were about 200-300 of us. This was an article in the local newspaper about us. Click here to read it. They welcomed us and there were breakfast foods surrounded by the many vendors that wanted our business. Oh my where do I begin!
Our first adventure was to YAS Mall. YAS Mall is on YAS Island and it is HUGE! When we arrived in Chicago we looked around and took in the sights. We knew we had to be at Gate M but we were not sure what Terminal that was in. We asked someone and got a general sense of where to go. Turns out you have to go out of the arrival area even though signs say in bold YOU ARE LEAVING THE SECURE AREA. We went out, went up an escalator, crossed a bridge, down an escalator and then we boarded a Train that would take us to Terminal 5. We arrived and had to back through the TSA check. I'm glad that we didn't wait to do all of this because others had to endure lines. Once we went through security we decided to get a little snack before our 13 hour flight. I ordered pizza and Mike got smoked salmon pasta. Both tasted great!
If anyone would've tried to tell me that I would be living in another country at any time in my life, I would have laughed at them. I am super grateful and excited to begin this journey. We have decided to spend as much time with friends and family as well as visit places that we might miss. So, here is what we did during our Final Tour of the Queen City, Charlotte, North Carolina.
